The Truth About America’s Sick Care System and Diabetes Prevention

I remember the very first lecture I got when I was studying to become a Health Coach. Dr. Weil made a strong statement about health care in the United States that was eye opening and also motivating; it ignited a passion in me to become the best health coach I could to help as many as I could to get to prevent disease through incorporating lifestyle changes and live a full life. This is what he said:

We don’t have a health care system—we have a sick care system – Dr. Andrew Weil, MD

Yes, it is a bold statement, one that hits close to home for millions. For decades, our american medical model has been largely reactive. Treating diseases once they show up and managing symptoms and prolonging illness, rather than preventing those conditions from developing in the first place.

And nowhere is this more evident than with type 2 diabetes.

The Silent Threat

In the U.S. today, over 98 million adults are living with prediabetes—a condition that dramatically increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Shockingly, more than 80% of them don’t even know they have it.

This lack of awareness comes with a heavy cost. According to the CDC, type 2 diabetes drains the U.S. economy of $327 billion each year, combining medical expenses and lost productivity.

But here’s the part we don’t talk about enough: type 2 diabetes is often preventable.

Prevention That Works

Decades of research show that with the right lifestyle changes, individuals at risk can reduce their chances of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 58%—and up to 71% for those over 60. That’s not just hope. That’s data-backed power in your hands.

These changes don’t require perfection. They start with small, sustainable shifts: mindful eating, moving more, managing stress, sleeping well. They’re not easy in our fast-paced world—but they are worth it.

A Mindset Shift

What if we treated wellness as a daily practice instead of a backup plan?

What if we empowered people not just with prescriptions, but with knowledge?

Prevention isn’t flashy. It doesn’t make headlines. But it’s the most underutilized, life-saving medicine we have. And it’s time we put it front and center.
