If you live in United States, you are familiar with Thanksgiving holiday and how it kicks off the holiday season until the new year. It is typically that holiday that regardless of the religious background, everyone typically gets together with family and friends and have many traditional foods and sweets.
As a health coach, many of my clients would ask what is the approach around the holidays to which I have a few tips to stay the course in the health and wellness journey while also enjoying life and family and not depriving yourself from celebrating.
Remember that Thanksgiving is only one day, while you may have a different routine for that day, it doesn’t have to derail you and have these adjustments to turn into a week long. While food is a great way to celebrate, remember that the biggest blessing is being around your loved ones and having an attitude of gratitude. See post from last week talking about how gratitude can positively impact your overall wellness here – https://coachjenp.com/2023/11/12/can-having-an-attitude-of-gratitude-benefit-your-health/
Now here are some tips to help you navigate Thanksgiving, or any other holiday, and stay focused on your overall vision of health and wellness:
- Don’t skip breakfast. I know it is tempting to skip all meals during the day and save those calories for the event, but my suggestion is to have a simple yet healthy breakfast. Something high in protein to give you energy and keep you fuel as you prepare for the day. Something as simple as whole wheat toast with egg and avocado or a smart protein shake would be ideal. Add some fruit and you will be ready for what the day may bring.
- Include vegetables within your menu. While there is nothing wrong with the traditional turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, and many others, I would suggest to add some salads and veggies to your meal. If you are hosting, include some options you know you can go to and build a healthy plate. If you are a guest, ask the host if it is ok to bring something which will give you one option that you know is aligned to your health goals.
- Include movement into your day. While you may not workout as you typically do, you can still add movement into your day. Taking a morning walk before the activities of the day may help you relax and give you some energy. Having a group walk after the meal is ideal to get everyone moving and it actually balances your blood sugar levels reducing the spike after eating a large meal.
- Don’t forget your healthy habits. Just because it is a holiday and the structure of the day may be different, don’t forget to stay hydrated, have some time be connect with yourself via meditation, taking a few breaths or prayer, movement and also get a good night sleep to have energy and prevent overeating.
Overall, remember to fill your joy cup, enjoy the company, the smells, the foods, the stories, the friendships and also reflect on your accomplishments.
Happy Thanksgiving 2023!
