According to Positive Psychology, Paul J. Meyer created the Wheel of Life in the 1960s as a tool to assess and identify focus areas and select which ones to focus on and incorporate them as part of goal creation. The ultimate goal is to achieve transformation; to make the changes needed to reach your desired vision of wellness and health. It is a valuable tool to use during coaching, not only on health and wellnes but in all aspects of life.
The Wheel of Life helps you see a snapshot of your wellbeing and the level of satisfaction in your current circumstances. It is typically made of 8 different components that can be expanded to 10 and be modified as needed. Personally, I believe this is a great tool to share with my clients when they want to identify areas of strength as well as areas of focus from which smart goals can be developed and be the starting point for the coaching plan.
I usually recommend my clients to spend some time reviewing the areas included in the wheel of life during the discovery call as a great foundation for creating their life vision. It is a great tool to identifying areas that client wants to build goals around in order to take these areas to a desired level.

While I enjoy taking a pen and writing thoughts and ideas that come to mind when evaluating each area of the wheel (see free template linked here – https://thecoachspace.com/downloads/TheCoachSpace-Wheel.pdf. ), there is an easy and free online tool that allows you to personalize your wheel of life (see link here – https://wheeloflife.noomii.com/.
While the wheel of life has evolved, in general, most versions address the same areas even when they are called or distributed differently. I would recommend looking into these areas before you start any coaching program so that you can focus on what is truly important to you and make the best out of the support and expertise a coach can provide.
